Hot 80s Nights: "A Night To Remember' by Shalamar (1982)

The Hot 80s Nights! keep on comin', and this night features the 1982 song A Night To Remember, by American funk/disco group Shalamar. Shalamar was originally a Los Angeles-based disco-group created by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey in 1975, and who later became a successful dance-trio formed by Soul Train producer Don Cornelius. The trio consisted of members Howard Hewett, Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniel. A Night To Remember is a single from the group's 1982 release album titled Friends, which peaked at #44 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and #8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart that year. So there is another 80s-disco hit that fits the Hot 80s Nights! series quite well, stay tuned for more and more and more 80s fans, there's always more great 80s music to be discovered after all. 

Tragic Love In The 80s: 'Blame It On The Rain' by Milli Vanilli (1989)

Tragic Love In The 80s returns, and this time we've got German pop-dance duo Milli Vanilli for you, and their 1989 hit Blame It On The Rain. Milli Vanilli was a pop-dance group formed by Frank Farian in Germany in 1988, which was fronted by Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus. Blame it on the Rain was released as a single on the group's debut album titled Girl You Know It's True, which was released July 13th, 1989. This group is famous of course for winning the Grammy Award for Best New Artist on Feb. 21, 1990, and then having it revoked when it was revealed that the actual vocals on their records were done by Charles Shaw, John Davis, Brad Howell, and twin sisters Jodie and Linda Rocco. It was a musical controversy that is still discussed to this day, as the Morvan and Pilatus suffered considerable losses in their careers and reputations as legitimate artists, and on April 2, 1998 (one day before the start of new promotional tour by the duo), Pilatus was found dead of a suspected alcohol and prescription drug overdose in a Frankfurt hotel room. So it is a sad story, and many people felt betrayed by them, but I personally don't care. The music industry doesn't allow those great artists who don't also have what is considered to be a "marketable look" as worthwhile ventures, so this is the kind of thing that results fromt that. I still dig the music and applaud the original artists as it still rocks my socks off to this day, besides, don't most of today's big vocalists pre-record and digitally enhance their actual voices for albums and live performances anways??

The Saxxy 80s: 'One Of The Living' by Tina Turner (1985)

Welcome back to The Saxxy 80s. Today's feature goes to Tina Turner and her 1985 hit song One Of The Living. Now the sax-portion of the song is a great sax-solo towards the end of the song, so if you are wondering where the sax comes in be patient, its loaded at the end. Tina Turner (Anna Mae Bullock) is an American singer and actress who has been active for over 50 years now and won various awards throughout her career. Interestingly (I didn't know this before this brief post) she has been dubbed by many as the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. One Of The Living was recorded in 1985 for the soundtrack to the film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. It was one of two songs recorded for that movie, in which Tina Turner also starred as one of the central characters. So again, check out that sax solo at the end of the song, its done by allstar saxophonist Tim Cappello (same buff sax player from The Lost Boys). 

The Beachy 80s: 'La Isla Bonita' by Madonna (1986)

Welcome back to The Beachy 80s! Now we are already in mid-September, and the beachy days of summer are fading fast, but that doesn't mean we can't go to our own inner-tropical paradise, or beachy 80s scene. That said, I am proud to present the 1986 beachy-classic Madonna song, La Isla Bonita. The dreamy Mediterranean-laced La Isla Bonita was originally released as a single off of Madonna's True Blue album in February of 1986 and it would attain #1 on the UK Singles Chart, and #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was a worldwide hit for Madonna, and it alos reached the #1 position in many European countries. And so there is a good song to keep handy in those cold winter months when you wish you were on a Spanish holiday in Mallorca or Ibiza. 

#6 of DJ Akhu's Top 100 80s Dance Hits Countdown!: 'Bizarre Love Triangle' by New Order (1986)

Ahoy there 80s Fans! Welcome back once again to the Top 100 80's Dance Hits Coundtown! Today I am here to present #6 of the countdown, and the song is...Bizarre Love Triangle, by British new-wave/post-punk/electronic 80s legends New Order. New Order was no doubt one of the most influential musical groups of the 1980s, and they were formed in 1980 in Salford and Macclesfield,England, United Kingdom by former Joy Division band members Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitars, synthesisers), Peter Hook (bass guitar and synths), and Stephen Morris (drums, electronic drums, synths), with the addition of keyboard player keyboard player Gillian Gilbert. New Order are by far one of my top 5 favorite bands of the 80s, and thus they have made it into the top 6! Bizarre Love Triangle was originally released in 1986 on the groups Brotherhood album and it peaked at #1 on the UK Indie Singles chart, #56 on the UK Singles Chart, and #98 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (upon re-release in 1995). In 2004 Bizarre Love Triangle was ranked #201 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. And so there is #6 for you all! Your 80s Hip Hop Trax: 'It Takes Two' by DJ EZ Rock and Rob Base (1988)

Your 80s Hip-Hop Trax is back, and this week we are featuring the epic 1988 hit hip-hop classic It Takes Two, by DJ EZ Rock and Rob Base. DJ E-Z Rock (Rodney "Skip" Bryce) and Rob Base (Robert Ginyard) are a hip-hop duo from Harlem, New York who formed back in 1985 and were best known for the multi-platinum single It Takes Two. The song It Takes Two was a single hit off of the duo's debut platinum-certified album of the same title, It Takes Two. The slowly climbed the Billboard Top 40 chart  to eventually peak at #36, and it hit #3 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Previously, I hadn't even realized this was an 80s song as I would have guessed and early 90s sound, but it was indeed 1988. So there it is, and if you want to see what's next you will have to stay tuned, and we are getting close to finishing off the Top 100 80s Dance Countdown as well!

Rockin' In the 80s: 'Never Surrender' by Lion (1986)

Rockin' In the 80s is still rockin', and today we are featuring the 1986 song Never Surrender, by English-American rock band Lion. Lion were an English-American rock band based out of Los Angeles, California, and who formed in 1983, and consisted of members Kal Swan and Tony Smith, who both  relocated from the UK and teamed up with bassist Alex Campbell and drummer Mark Edwards, and then later recruited guitarist Doug Aldrich and bassist Jerry Best (both of whom had previously recorded with the band Mansfield) to complete the Lion line-up. Lion are best known for their theme song to the 1986 animted film The Transformers: The Movie, but they also produced 3 studio albums before disbanding in 1989. Never Surrender is a song they made for the soundtrack to the 1986 sci-fi/action film The Wraith, and that is where it can be found. Hot 80s Nights!: 'I'm Your Lover' by Joe Yellow (1988)

Hot 80s Nights! returns once again, and it certainly is the season of hot summer nights, even into September! This week's feature goes to 80s Italo-Disco artist Joe Yellow and his 1988 song I'm Your Lover. Joe Yellow (Domenico Ricchini) had a few hits in the 80's, and I'm Your Lover comes off of his 1988 album of the same title, which was produced by famous Italo Disco producers Mauro Farina and Giuliano Crivellente. Tragic Love in the 80s: 'Holdin' On' by Tane Cain (1983)

There was just never enough tragic love in the 80s, and so today we return with another tragic 80s love song. Its a bit more rockin' than the previous tragic hits, and it is the 1983 song Holdin' On, by American singer/actress/film producer Tane Cain. Tain Cain (Tané McClure), daughter of actor Doug McClure was born in Los Angeles, California in 1958 and raised in Hawaii. She sang in a latin-jazz band in the 1970's called Sweet Honesty, and shortly after she married a keyboardist that she landed her own record deal in 1982 and recorded her debut self titled album Tané Cain, which was released in 1983. Holdin' On peaked at #37 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album itself managed to hit #121 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. The Saxxy 80s: 'Do You Believe In Love' by Huey Lewis and the News (1982)

The Saxxy 80s are back, and just to remind you, these are generally 80s songs with lots of sax in them, or even just a good sax solo break somewhere, and sometimes the sax doesn't kick in until the end of the song. This week's Saxxy 80s feature is the 1982 song Do You Believe In Love, by American rock group Huey Lewis and the News. Huey Lewis and the News originated out of San Francisco, California USA in 1979 and now consists of members Huey Lewis, Johnny Colla, Sean Hopper, Bill Gibson, John Pierce, Stef Burns, Marvin McFadden, Rob Sudduth, and Johnnie Bamont. The band has had 19 Top 10 singles across the Billboard Hot 100, Adult Contemporary and Mainstream Rock charts since their conception. Do You Believe In Love was their first Top 10 hit, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart, and can be found on their 1982 album Picture This. 

The Beachy 80s: 'Conga' by Miami Sound Machine (1985)

The Beachy 80s is back for all your hot summer 80s needs, and today we are featuring the beachy 1985 classic hit Conga, by American group Miami Sound Machine. Miami Sound Machine was originally formed in 1975 by keyboardist Emile Estefan Jr. and was known then as Miami Latin Boys. The band was shortly joined by singers  Gloria Estefan and her cousin Merci Navarro Murciano and renamed Miami Sound Machine. The song Conga was released in 1985 on the group's second english album Primitive Love, where it achieved the #1 spot on U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Singles chart, and #10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Now, if this song doesn't make you want to go chill out and dance at a beach-side bar and drink margaritas, than you may be a lost cause, sorry ;-) 

#7 of DJ Akhu's Top 100 80's Dance Hits Countdown: 'Erotic City' by Prince (1984)

Welcome back to the Top 100 80's Dance Hits Coundtown! The title of this countdown has changed from DJ Samsonite to DJ Purple Sneakers, and so we shall see which handle works out for me in the end with the least amount of trademark/copyright issues. I will not be going back to change the titles of previous posts however, for your information. Now for #7 of DJ Purple Sneakers's Top 100 80's Dance Hits Countdown, from 1989, Erotic City, by American singer/song-writer/musician/and legend that we all love and know as Prince. If Michael Jackson was the King of Pop, then Prince was undoubtedly the Prince of Pop.  Prince (born Prince Rogers Nelson, and 53 years old in 2011) has been active on the music scene circa 1976 and originates out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Prince has produced 10 Platinum albums, and 30 Top 40 singles during his career. According to his Wikipedia page, Prince has several hundred unreleased songs in his vault (wow!). To name some of his achievements he won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, and even an Academy Award and in 2004 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As for the song, Erotic City was originally released on the B-side of his 1984 single Let's Go Crazy. So there is #7, and we are nearing the Top 5 now, soon to be finished! Your 80s Hip-Hop Trax: 'Atomic Dog' by George Clinton (1982)

Your 80s hip hop returns and today we feature the 1982 hip hop track Atomic Dog, by American singer/song-writer/music producer George Clinton. George Clinton (now aged 70) originated out of Plainfield, New Jersey USA, and he started his music career back in 1955. He was the mastermind behind the funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic in the the 1970's and '80's, and his actual solo-career debuted in 1981. Atomic Dog is a true 80's hip-hop/funk gem, and it was released in 1982 on Clinton's Computer Games album. Be sure to check out the music video for it, its a classic! Rockin' In the 80s: 'Tell Me What You Want' by Zebra (1983)

We are Rockin' out to the 80s once again, and today the song is Tell Me What You Want, by 80s American rock band Zebra. Zebra were founded in 1975 out of New Orleans, Louisiana, consisting of members Randy Jackson (guitar and vocals), Felix Hanemann (bass guitar, keyboards and vocals) and Guy Gelso (drums and vocals), and they are still active today. Tell Me What You Want comes off of their 1983 debut gold-status self-titled album Zebra, and this song peaked at #29 on the US Mainstream Rock chart. Keep Rockin' 80s fans!

Hot 80s Nights!: 'Take Me Home Tonight' by Eddie Money (1986)

Straight out of 1986, Hot 80s Nights! presents our latest track, and the track is... Take Me Home Tonight, by American rock-singer/guitarist/saxophonist/song-writer Eddie Money. Eddie Money (Edward Joseph Mahoney), originally from Brooklyn, New York, is a successful rock star in the 1970's and 80's who produced many Top 40 Hits and Plantinum Albums. Take Me Home Tonight was released on his 1986 Can't Hold Back album, and it reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Now, I've been on holiday again, which is why there was such a long break between posts, but I am back now again for a little while so stay tuned for more 80s treats!
